I bought an hdtv and it has connections to connect both video and audio from the computer. It has 2 video options: connect the computer’s video card to the tv with an analog rgb 15 pin cable. I don’t have the cable so I used the other option, connecting the video card to one of 2 hdmi slots, using an adapter. This worked fine. The problem is I can’t get audio. I want to play youtube videos on the tv screen with sound. I get the video but no sound. The tv has a 3mm jack specifically for connecting to the 3mm sound card jack. I did this but no sound. I have the creative labs Sound Blaster Live 24 bit. It has 4 jacks on the back of the computer and I tried all of them. The manual does not help. I was thinking that maybe I need to use the tv’s pc connection instead of the hdmi connection but will need to get a cable. The video card is the nvidia geforce 6800 xt. I have xp.

I would greatly appreciate any input to resolve this. Thanks, Tom

Is there a setting on the TV that specifies which audio input to use?

I'm not sure if this audio jack you're using is a regular mini jack or SPDIF, if SPDIF you have to specify in the computer sound, playback options to use the digital output.

If not, line out (computer) to line (TV) in is what you want. May possibly be one HDMI connector on your TV the has the HDMI plug with audio inputs, that's the one you want, may need to split the signal to left and right and use appropriate cable to get sound though.

To use the HDMI to carry both audio and video you need one of the newer ATI cards that have the built in sound card or one of the Nvidia cards that allows the pass through SPDIF cable to connect from the motherboard pin header to the video card.

If you could poast pictures of TV connections or link to model that may help.

Thanks Pat,

There is only one slot to insert a 3.5 mm audio cable. The Toshiba manual says to use analog audio cables. It says in diagrams the PC is output and the TV is input. The Creative sound manual indicates that the cable should be inserted into the Digital I/O jack and the TV input jack. This is what I did. I used a standard 3.5mm stereo audio cable from Amazon. The reviews stated they were bought by others for the same purpose, to connect their PC to their TV. Here is the link that if you scroll down you see a diagram of the rear connections. Tom

From what I see in the diagram and looking at the Toshiba web site, you will need to use an HDMI cable that can carry the sound from the computer.

Or use the PC D-sub connection with the audio line in. (This is, most likely, what the "other reviewers" are doing.)

I don't see a separate audio line in to use with the HDMI connection or a separate audio line in.

You can't mix the connections, use the HDMI cable and an audio line in from video 1, 2 or other as you can only playback signal from one device input at a time. My guess is that if you switched the TV input over to what ever you have the audio line in connected to you would have sound and no picture.

If your video card has an S-video output you could use that with the audio (video 1). The PC or HDMI would be the better video though.

On my TV I have 4 HDMI connections with one that allows for an HDMI cable with separate audio input.

That's the way it looks to me.

I ordered this cable:

10FT SVGA VGA Laptop to TV Monitor 3x Shielded Cable w/AUDIO 10' FT LCD/Monitor

from here:

http://www.amazon.com/Laptop-Monitor-Shielded-Cable-AUDIO/dp/B001R0LMMM/ref=pd_ybh_3?pf_rd_p=280800601&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_t=1501&pf_rd_i=ybh&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1P7ME1850CQHV4PQJYJN

This is the direct connection from the computer to the pc connection on the tv. It's only $10.75 and is necessary to free up the hdmi slot for other uses.  I'll try this.

I got the cable in to connect the computer to the pc port on the tv. This solved the sound problem but now the video sucks. I will start a new thread to explain. Thanks for all your input.
