I have a toshiba hdtv 32av502r which has 2 hdmi ports and a pc port to connect to the computer; on the pc I have a nvidia geforce 6800 xt. The os is xp. I was using one of the hdmi ports with an adapter to connect to the computer and the picture was great. Nice color but no sound. I just got in a standard cable to connect from the computer to the pc port on the tv. The sound now works but the color is awful. No reds. You can try to adjust the color by right clicking on the screen, click properties and a box lets you change the resolution and adjust the color, which has 32 bit, 16 bit and 8 bit. None of them improves the color. I tried all settings on the tv and it has no effect. In tv mode the color is as good as before.

You can choose various resolutions per above but no matter which one I choose it only fills up about 2/3 of the screen. Connected to the hdmi port the computer screen filled up the tv screen, and as I said the color was great. I don't see how it would be the video card if it worked okay on the hdmi slot. It might be a deficient card I suppose and if anyone believes that is the case what card would you recommend for browsing the net, playing youtube videos and storing jpegs, I have no interest in games.

I suspect this may be a toshiba problem. Thanks for any assistance. Tom

Do you have another cable to check this with, even if you have to check with a shorter cable and move the computer closer to check. Could be a faulty cable, I would verify this before buying another video card.

Try opening up the nvidia control panel and navigate to Adjust Desktop Size and Position to see if you can correct the display size. May also try updating your video drivers.

Can suggest other cards, but need to know if your system has PCI-E for Video or AGP.

Thanks Pat. I decided to go back to the original configuration since I'm not using the 2nd hdmi slot on the tv. But I left the pc connection on the tv to the computer also, so I would have 2 connections. That way I could switch back and forth. I hooked it all up and guess what, the color came back. Everything is normal on both connections. I don't know if it was a faulty connection or what but something happened. Appreciate your input.

I now have in effect a 32" monitor and I don't think I will buy a separate computer monitor since this is working fine. For YouTube it is really nice, and with the sound coming through the tv speakers which are pretty good for tv speakers. Of course, I would now like to get a 5.1 system but I don't like the idea of buying another receiver. I have an old Sony STR D615 I bought like 15 years ago. The speakers connect to the receiver by bare wires. I researched this on the net and it appears a 5.1 system with the av cables won't connect. The receiver is perfectly good condition and I can get sound from the tv through the existing speakers but the quality is not all that good. If you know of a way to hook up a 5.1 system with av cables let me know but don't spend any time researching it.

Good that you got that sorted out.

Not sure about the 5.1, but you should be able to use a regular audio cable from the TV audio out to to the receiver AUX in or if no AUX, possibly another audio in not in use. You may have to make an adjustment on the TV to make the audio switch over from the TV speakers to the audio out.

I have the tv connected to the sony receiver so I can play the sound through the speakers connected to the receiver. It even has surround sound capability but it won't work with the speaker connections in systems today. They use the plug in av cables. Mine uses bare wires that clip to openings in the rear of the receiver. If I could buy a set of those I might go that route but I don't know where you would find them. I have a pair of 12 inch 3 way speakers I bought 25 years ago and they still sound good. If you or anyone knows where I might find these kind of old speakers let me know. I found a discussion of the new type av cable speakers on the web and someone there said you can't cut the cables to expose the wires and attach them to the receiver. He said there is no way he knows how to make them work with this receiver (STR D615).
