My mobo has 1 IDE and 2 SATA connectors.
Computer has one HDD and one optical drive.

I will open the case to check, but am assuming the optical is on the IDE.

Can I get a SATA optical to replace my dead DVD burner, then?

Am not going to add an HDD, so 2nd SATA will not be needed.

Am I on the right track so far?
Its been several years since I poked around in computers.

And they were the older kind, "from the turn of the century".

Yes, all you need is an available SATA connection.  But don't make any assumptions until you check the IDE status. And most SATA 2 drives are backwardly compatible with SATA 1.

Dug out my spare machine and will remove the DVD burner.
There is still a CD-ROM in the spare, so it will still be useful.

Good to learn about the SATA optical drives, though.
Might have to buy one Somewhere Down The Road.

DVD drives have become very inexpensive.  This one, SAMSUNG 22X DVD Burner Black SATA Model SH-S223F, was $24.99 a year ago, and this morning is $23.99.

Flip the disk to laser burn a label.
Beats printing them and sticking them on.

My sticky labels have not peeled up at all, but they sometimes do.

So, the laser burn seems like a good alternative for labeling.

Not in color.

Seems like a good idea.  But I am more of a utilitarian burner, if I've done 6 that would be alot.  I label the jewel case and put them away.

I know what you mean.
Sometimes a fancy disk label is needed, sometimes not.

I use the fine tip Sharpie for "utility" disks.  The ink has never reached the working layer below. I never leave a disk unlabeled.

Now you have me thinking it might be time to take advantage of low prices and upgrade the burner.

My first CD burner was $200!
Photo printer was $400!

Samsung is a respected brand and I have never bought from NewEgg, so might just take the Bill Challenge.

I will resist as long as I can.....

Nope.
Cost of Sharpies is high.

I hate to remove a working burner in a perfectly usable back up machine.  Time to move on.

I'm going in.

Opened case cover to check SATA/ IDE status as mentioned above.
Two SATA and one IDE confirmed on Mobo.

Will go with an IDE optical, as the machine is set up to accommodate IDE's up top to optical drives, and SATA's below to HDD's.

Might want to add a 2nd optical or HDD.

Odd thing is that the DVD burner has no audio out cable.
Yet I get audio from it..  Is it coming out the IDE cable?

Any opticals I worked on with older machines always had an audio out plug to the sound card.  Sorry to be so behind!

Thanks for all the input. Very valuable and I appreciate it a lot.

Must be, certainly not from the Power cable.  Are you using onboard sound?  That would make some sense.

Yes, sound card on the motherboard.
Wow, that audio coming out the IDE ribbon is a new one on me!

An added sound card would need the audio outlet.

I poked around older machines, but only added RAM to this one,
so never really studied it or had to play upgrade or repair.

Am having difficulties finding a low price IDE DVD burner, with or without Lightscribe.   Tongue

You might want to re-think using the SATA type.  SATA carries audio.

IDE, these days, is a long way from popular or current technology.  Probably very few IDE anything being made.

I just searched Tiger Direct for IDE HHDs, they had none.  NewEgg has several IDE HHDs, primarily Western Digital and some external HDs and enclosures that have both connections.
I didn't look for DVD burners thinking HDs were purchased more frequently.

Thanks for the IDE heads up!

Just ordered the Lightscribe model I listed above.
Also a 50 pack of my preferred media disk, Verbatim, in Lightscribe, for only $14, with additional 2 bucks shipping.

All in all, a good morning.
And my back up machine remains intact!

Will work out the power cable issue to the SATA.

Bill, I checked on my order and found that I had chosen CD's not DVD's.
I canceled the order and installed the DVD burner from my spare machine.

Just played Bee Gees One Night Only show.
Burned a movie from the HDD and that was also perfecto.

http://preview.tinyurl.com/yjavxua  (opens a preview for your safety)

Just ordered this from NewEgg.
It was shown in the email newsletter/ad yesterday.
LG SATA DVD burner, no LightScribe, very good price and free shipping.
I will not be retuning it as some reviewers did.
They mentioend a "Bluebird" software nag screen issue.

The SATA cable can go into the one remaining connector port on the MOBO.

Are SATA's daisy chainable?  Is there a connector or adapter for that?

Will re-install the used burner to the back-up machine.

I have never seen a SATA daisy chain adapter... I think they are one connection only.  If you look closely when you install the drive you'll see what I mean.

Are you really sure you want to put up with the nag screens?
EDIT:  I read further into the reviews and it seems LG has eliminated the buebird firmware in more recent models.

Yes.

I will allow the installation of the Bluebird software to stop the nagging.
I will see if it is listed in the start-ups in Win Patrol Pro, then disable it.

Otherwise, an extra icon won't bother me.

I really like LG products, so am OK with any ads I might get from the Bluebird.

I am looking at the low price and free shipping, and getting the back-up puter back to its earlier state... fill that optical drive hole.

Am very interested in updating to SATA, as well.
Forward movement is good.

As always, your input is much appreciated.

The new LG is not seen in BIOS.
Bought a new SATA cable for the installation.

BIOS settings for SATA were all enabled.

I don't have a clue what to do next.

Is it a DOA or is there a possible SATA and SATA II compatability issue?
Sure hope not!

Shouldn't be a SATA SATA II problem.  Can you try the LG in your backup system?
