I am presently using Klipsch 2.0 and the left one has developed a very storng static particularly when listening to full range music.  Higher notes produce the problem, turning down the volume doesn't help.  I don't want to spend for a full blown stereo system but I'd like to replace them with something that can handle opera and the high range stuff.

Any recommendations before I actually go listen?

Try swapping channels.  That will ID if its a speaker or channel issue.

Ground anything you can find with a dedicated wire from speakers to computer frame.. if possible....

Update drivers and d/l a fresh copy if possible.

Just a few leads for you for starters.

I had been using the Win7 native driver and 2 days ago installed the Realtek ones. In addition to being huge, they made a noticeable difference.  Along with the static in the speaker, which is new, the volume control has a short that crackles every time I change it (for the last 2 years or so).  I am really not an audiophile but this kind of a problem annoys the heck out of me.

Time for an upgrade....not a repair.  But thanks.

Yes the speakers.  I am using the realtek onboard audio and it's great, even better now with the new drivers.  The Realtek control panel leaves a bit to be desired but it's sufficient.

BTW I am running the malware bytes thing on the mail machine now.

IC.

Well, please let me know if malware shows up that does not show in other places (other than Spybot S&D).
I just now copied and pasted that .exe from old Vista to new Vista OS.
You timing is good.   Smiley

If you are looking for new speakers I can most certainly recommend Logitech Z-4... Not to expensive, but surprisingly full sound.

Thanks, but I would like to avoid the wired remote.  Just another bit of clutter on the desktop.

I don't know how much "oomph" you're looking for, but over the Christmas season I purchased Best Buy's Insignia brand 2.1 speakers for around $79.

Although it's not a particularly powerful system, they work MUCH better than a Logitech system that I tried for about the same price. I use them for MP3 music and occasional music videos on my HP laptop with good results.

Well I'm not looking to rattle the walls! I will give them a listen when I go.

Thanks.

Did you get this resolved? These Insignia 2.1 speakers (Model NS-PCS4) are the ones I bought from Best Buy, which are currently going for $70.

I've had them since December and I have no doubt that I'd make the same purchase again. I use them in my bedroom where they are hooked up to my HP laptop. I would not say that they are high performance speakers, but they easily meet my needs. I mostly listen to music and watch Netflix movies and music videos.

I am not impressed with Logitech's anemic speakers. You'd have to spend twice as much on their garbage and still not get something as good as these.

Well yes, resolved to a point.  I listened...bear in mind I have been using Klipsch 2.0... and while the Insignia are OK, the ones that blew me away were the Klipsch Pro media 2.1.  Unfortunately, when I looked they were $150+ so I am rethinking what I want to do.

If I can find a decent used receiver I may invest in full size speakers & a sub-woofer.  I have the room and the space........
